Stress Management 101

Posted by: | Comments (3)

I am going to do a series of articles on stress because stress can have an enormous impact on health, productivity, happiness, and everything to do with managing.stress-management-101  Now I can’t say I was always the perfect example but in almost 20 years I rarely got sick and managed to stay a size 4 or 6.  I didn’t exercise everyday but I did it a few times a week and I ate whatever I wanted……..  Okay, within reason.  More on that to come.

Also, the impact on our personal lives is HUGE!

So this will be a series of subjects relating to stress.  Be sure to submit your comment by clicking on “comments”, or even emailing me or filling out the contact form to let me know any concerns, topics, stories, etc.

Stress Management 101: Learn To Take Care Of Yourself

Stress can really harm our body’s normal function; especially if we don’t pay attention to the warning signs.  Often  even when we deny the sensations we are feeling on our bodies, we can surely feel that our physical and mental state is in an alarm state.  It’s very important for an individual to learn to watch out for the warning signs that stress is already taking control of your system.  You need to learn the ways to take care of your body to avoid a total breakdown.

I know first hand this sounds like common sense but often people dealing with overwhelming stress often don’t know what to do to get out of it.  Not managing stress can lead to a series of diseases and destructive behaviour.

Look Out For The Danger Signs

Stress often starts out in our minds before it starts to show some signs on our bodies.  Keep in mind that both are connected and one will show some effects of the other.  A stress-free mind is often linked to an active and healthy body, but a mind riddled with problems will surely result to a deteriorating health.

It is very important for a person to watch out for danger signs your body is nearing the limits of its tolerance to stress.  Often times, we will feel some minor aches and pains in various parts of our body when your mind is getting burdened with all the stress and problems it is subjected to.  If left unchecked, it might result to sleeping and behavioral problems, lack of breath, or even a potential heart attack when it is already above the danger level.

Mentally Cope With Stress

The mind shows the first signs of stress and will later reveal itself to your emotional and physical state when left unchecked.  It is extremely important that we learn how to calm our minds when under the throes of stress and learn to focus our thoughts in order to push the problems further back in our minds and learn to relax when you need to.

This might take some effort if it’s your first time trying to manage your stress.  But there are some techniques you can use to simplify the process and help you learn it bit by bit.  You can start by listening to your favorite music to help focus your thoughts.  Try singing along with the lyrics or hum the tune to yourself to divert your attention away from your problems.

Breathing Exercise

Another method is to focus on your breathing.  You can start some exercises which involves breathing in and out in specific intervals.  This might take some getting used to on your first try but you will be able to focus on your breathing immediately after some practice.

Also, this exercise will ensure that your body, as well as your mind will get enough oxygen for it to function properly. We usually hyper-ventilate or suffer short breathing when stressed so it’s best to practice some breathing exercise to help you cope with it.

Eat The Right Food To Fight Stress

You need to take care of what we eat if you plan to fight stress head-on.  It is essential that our body gets enough nutrients for it to function properly and avoid a breakdown when our mind is getting bombarded with problems.  The bad thing is this is often where people go off the tracks.

All of this is easier said than done of course, often when people are under extreme stress they reach for food to make themselves feel better.  For me that usually meant chocolate…….  Almost every manager that’s worked for me would list chocolate as my main food group, but it wasn’t.  I ate it in moderation most of the time.

Avoid eating foods that are high in cholesterol and try to focus more on integrating a healthy lifestyle of fruits and vegetables.  You might not know it, but healthy foods can also help you in dealing with stress.  After all, if you’re not burdened with body pains then you can focus more in helping your mind cope with it.   Mix healthy foods with something that comforts you (that is my opinion really), I was always working long days so when I did cook it needed to be simple.

One of my favorite dinners when I was stressed was a healthy salad, baked salmon and penne noodles with my “special” fettucine sauce.  I know purists will disagree with me on this but I think butter is a natural ingredient, so I use real butter because I prefer eating natural ingredients over others.  So I would saute a little garlic, then add it to another pan.  In the other pan I would melt half a stick of butter, add some non-fat milk, basil, oregano, dash of pepper, and fresh shredded parmesan (okay, I buy my parmesan PRE shredded, but hey, I was busy!).  I would put a half the sauce on my noodles, put the salmon fillet on the noodles and pour the rest of my sauce on the top.  This meal would satisfy me AND my soul!!!

There is more to come with this article series.

EQ Numbers

Posted by: | Comments (0)

There are many, many numbers on EQ and its effects on performance, productivity, employee engagement and much more.

The following numbers are from Daniel Goleman’s book Working with Emotional Intelligence.

Daniel Goleman’s analysis of 181 jobs in 121 organizations found that emotional competencies were the best differentiators between star performers and typical performers.

In top leadership positions over 85% of the difference in performance is due to emotional competence.

Salespeople selected for emotional competencies at L’Oreal outsold collegues by $91,370 each, for net revenue increase of $2,558,360.

Met Life salesman who scored high on the optimism sell 37% more insurance in their first two years.

At L’Oreal sales agents who were selected for their strengths in emotional competence had 63 percent less turnover during their first year than those whose selection disregarded their competence profile. Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence.

Among newly hired sales reps at a start-up computer company, those hired for emotional competence were 90 percent more likely to finish their training than those hired for other criteria. Daniel Goleman, Working with Emotional Intelligence.

With some of these examples, and there are countless others, how can companies afford not to educate employees in these topics?  What’s more, how can an employee, knowing education and training is out there, not take the opportunity to become better and more promotable?

Think of these statistics…..

The following are from Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves.

EQ is so critical to success that it accounts for 58% of performance in all types of jobs.

Only 36% of the people we tested are able to accurately identify their emotions as they happen.

People with the highest levels of IQ outperform those with average IQ just 20% of the time, while people with average IQs outperform those with high IQs 70% of the time.

The link to EQ and earnings is so direct that every point increase in EQ adds $1300 to an annual salary.

Self-awareness is so important for job performance that 83% of people high in self-awareness are top performers, and just 2% of bottom performers are high in self awareness.

What Next?

Emotional intelligence can be improved upon.  In fact, it might be a great training focus for your employees or yourself.  It takes constant focus to overcome old habits and make behavior changes.

Early in my career I found that I was stressed out and running around like a chicken all the time and I had less than 20 employees.  I was very controlling, I didn’t care what was going on with my employees other than what they could get done for me.  I found I snapped at people, was by the rules and really focused on results.

At the time, my direct supervisor was influential in my development.  He had conversations with me where we would work out the rational of what needed to get done and why.  He was always understanding, asked my input and there was more…  He even knew people two tiers below him and would ask me if I knew so-and-so liked horses too.  Did I know so-and-so’s husband was in the hospital….  On and on.

It dawned on me one day that if he could find time in his busy day to chat with me and all these other people, why couldn’t I?  Didn’t I have more responsibility to my subordinates than he did?  Didn’t he have more to do than I did?  So… I dug in.

It took months and months.  I then read Daniel Goleman’s book, Working with Emotional Intelligence and I finally understood all the components.  It still took months, but with the use of my journal and my boss at the time I did become a better people person.  I was also able to manage people more effectively and with a lot less stress. I smiled more, talked to my employees.  Guess what happened next?  It carried over into my home life as well.

I would never of won the awards I have won over the years or the monetary prizes.  I would of never been able to help as many employees go on to become successful themselves.  I would never of had the compassion to take an average or D player and find out how to make them successful.

It’s really that important.

New Site!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

As a LONG time management veteran I found myself with a few issues…..

I am having to completely RE-DO my website because it suddenly crashed…… As in not able to get emails, login to my blog, or even FIND it with Google.

The web-designer I had that built it the last time is no where to be found and there is not a “help desk” because she said she WAS my help desk.   So when my site went down there was NO ONE to contact.

It’s okay though, it will be back up within a week……….  AND I started my own company that builds websites because I have been SO dissappointed with my experience!!  I knew HTML when I was younger, worked with sites, etc.  I just hadn’t done it in the last decade, but guess what??????

But guess what?  As a manager it’s not just what YOU know….  It’s what YOU can do with talent and how you utilize it.  I know what other people need and I know what I needed in regards to websites, so why not make a company and “get ‘er dun!”

There are several things I’m really good at………..

  • Hiring and recruiting quality people.
  • Communicating clear goals and guidelines.
  • Communicating deadlines, managing issues, etc.
  • Motivating people to achieve the results I want.
  • Meeting deadlines.
  • Asking detailed questions so customers get exactly what they are looking for.
  • Ensuring customer/client needs are met and over-exceeded.
  • Follow up, follow up, follow up…………
  • Finding solutions to problems.

So there I am………  Two businesses and guess what??  I couldn’t be happier!!  I LOVE working LONG days and unlike a lot of people who work for themselves who want to work LESS, I am excited to work MORE and have more stress!!!

So check back on this site, I am going to have to work on this around other clients!
